Starting from the Rutland Region Visitor's Center in Main Street Park, Rutland City; drive South on US Route 7 from Visitor's Center - 2.8 miles to N. Shrewsbury Road (12 traffic lights; left hand turn at 12th light). Yamaha dealership on right across the street from N. Shrewsbury Rd. Intersection.
* * Important - To follow mileage reset your odometer from here at N. Shrewsbury Road. Aprox. time of tour a casual 2 hours; or you can easily turn it into 4 hours plus if you really want to soak up the scenery and relax.
Proceed up N. Shrewsbury Road. Important: drive straight through but bearing slightly left at intersection that looks like an X on N. Shrewsbury road and proceed to stop sign at Cold River Road (note this is 7/10 of a mile from US 7).
Now simply turn right onto Cold River Road at this stop sign and
proceed up Cold River Road.
Important: at long right hand bend there will be a dirt road to your left. Turn left onto this short dirt road to see the first spectacular covered bridge. (note yellow and black road sign 8'11"). Mile 2.4
This is the Brown Bridge built in 1880.
Next turn left and proceed up Upper Cold River Road (Up the hill - Paved Road). Soon Cold River will be on your left and there is a very small but convenient pull off and a rock to sit for pictures on left. Mile 4.4 and 5.5.
Stay on Upper Cold River road (straight when you see the Yield Intersection) and it will lead to the Town Offices and great photo opportunities at Mile 7.8

At next intersection with big tree in median turn right at the "Cuttingsville 4 mi" sign and see the:
Historic W. E. Pierce Groceries store on the left. Mile 8.0
Proceed down the hill and turn left at Eastham Road. Mile 8.1
On left is the:
Saddle Mountain Kennels at the Big Red Barn.
Scenic Pasture on right. Mile 8.2
The road will change from paved to gravel. Mile 8.9
A Horse Farm will be on your left and
a beautiful historic white home. Mile 9.2
Next will be:
Doug Gogeun's Crab Apple Farm on the left. Mile 9.6
another beautiful historic white home on the left surrounded by foliage and with a scenic pasture on the right. Mile 9.7
At next intersection turn left and continue on Eastham Road (still dirt road) and you will see:
horses and sheep grazing at the Beaver Meadow Farm. Mile 10.4
Continue on the dirt road and you will see a:
historic looking barn on the right just prior to the road returning to pavement. Mile 11.0
Important: this is the location of an incredible:
"foliage lane" as we have coined it; located on the paved road going down the hill. You are engulfed in breathtaking foliage as you drive down this lane. Mile 11.3
After you have caught your breath; keep driving to the bottom of the hill and turn right onto Mount Holly Road (paved) and drive down the hill and stay on the paved road as it bears left. Mile 11.6
Drive forward through the intersection at Hortonville Road and follow paved road south past the 1843 house at 639 Hortonville Rd.
At 4 Way Intersection bear left down the hill on paved road past an old house. (Note Yellow and Black + sign on right as you approach the intersection). Mile 15.1
At the Blinking Stop Light at bottom of hill turn right onto US Route 103 North. Mile 15.4
Proceed on Route 103 North until reaching the Junction of Route 140 West bear left at the "Y" and follow Route 140 West.
Stay On Route 140 West at intersection with Route 155 South. Mile 17.8
At Hearth and Cricket Stove Shop on right stay on Route 140 and the:
East Wallingford Baptist Church is on left (drive up the hill on Route 140 and the:
Seward Farm Market will be on your right Mile 18.0
Stay on Route 140 West past the:
white Mount Mariah Lodge #96 chartered in 1871 on left. Mile 18.1
The road will then weave through beautiful meadows and may pass Vermont cows feeding in the meadows. Mile 18.2
Drive down the road (still Route 140 West) and eventually the road will enter a curvy 25 mile an hour section down the hill. Green Mountain National Forest on left. Mile 22.1
*Very Important note here: This is easy to miss!
Look closely for East St.- paved road at sharp turn into side street on right off of Route 140 as you are driving down the hill. Mile 22.8
Look for small gray power shed on left and East St. will be directly across on right. Also you will see a STOP sign facing East St. on right as you approach.
Proceed up the hill on East St. for more spectacular Vermont scenery. You won't want to miss this part!
Bear left at the top of the hill (road will turn to dirt) continue on East St. - Lee Houghton Builder and Cabinet Maker on right. Mile 23.2
Bit O' Wind scenic red farm on right. Mile 23.9
More classic Vermont Cows and the Clarendon Town line marker, more pasture with cows on left next to road.
Salem Farm on right with horses in pasture surrounded by white fencing. Mile 24.5
Kevin Spencer's - Antique Tractors Repaired and Restored on right at the farm and on the left more pasture and cows. Mile 25
Next is a Pure Vermont Maple Sugar shack on left. Mile 25.1
Road will change to old pavement, proceed down the hill. At bottom is the:
Kingsley Covered Bridge built in 1836 (one car at a time). Mile 26.9
At the corner stop sign after bridge turn right on Gorge Road and just shortly up road turn left at stop sign onto Airport Road. Mile 27.0
Proceed north on Airport Road past Rutland State Airport on the left and follow road down to the intersection with US Route 103 North. Turn left onto Route 103 North and drive past Apple Hill Farm stand on right at Route 7B. Mile 28.3
Before traffic light bear right and merge onto US Route 7 North towards Rutland.
Congratulations! You have completed the Foliage "Loop" returning back to the starting point at the traffic light on US 7 N and N. Shrewsbury Road. Mile 30.2
