Table of ContentRutland Free Library holds their annual Tables of Content gala event held at the library.

We serve an elegant dinner in the Fox Room with a distinguished group of authors from around the state.

Authors move from table to table with each course and there’s a reception & book signing to start the evening.

We are celebrating the reopening (and renovation) of the beautiful and historic Fox Room.

Rutland Historical Society President (and reference librarian emeritus) Jake Sherman will discuss the library’s history and Randal Smathers will (briefly) discuss where we’re headed.

Hors d’oeuvres, light refreshments, wine & beer.

68 + 50: The music of 1968

Tuesday, April 17 at 7 PM – 9 PM

Join music historian, educator, walking rock & roll encyclopedia, radio personality, Alabama fan, and Rutland’s favorite adopted son “Uncle Dave” Tibbs for a memorable (and FREE) evening looking (and listening) back to the music of 1968.

1967 was the Summer of Love but 1968 changed the world in ways still felt today. Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. were killed. Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised a fist on the Olympic podium. Apollo 8 circled the moon. The Tet Offensive turned the Vietnam War. Richard Nixon turned up in the White House.
In music, The Beatles released the White Album; Jimi Hendrix lit up Electric Ladyland; The Rolling Stones released Jumpin’ Jack Flash; Aretha Franklin coined Lady Soul; Marvin Gaye Heard it Through the Grapevine and Otis Redding was Sittin’ by the Dock of the Bay … among many, many others.

The scientific method has been heralded as inherently democratic, but with scientists carrying a kind of authority based on their specialized knowledge, the relationship between science and democracy is more complex.

Middlebury professor Heidi Grasswick examines the challenges of integrating the goals of democracy with the practices of science.
