Ivan Rojas Tovar, Peruvian Sculptor Presentation

The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center hosts Peruvian sculptor Ivan Alberto Rojas Tovar as Artist in Residence during July 2016. Rojas studied at Toulouse Lautrec Academy of Graphic Design and Ricardo Palma University.
He works with clearly defined purpose to release expressive shapes from their encasement in stone and wood. http://www.rojassculpture.com/

Robert Haskell Artist in Residence Talk

The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center hosts sculptor Robert Haskell as Artist in Residence during June 2016.

robert haskellHaskell has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and currently teaches in Bar Harbor, Maine. His multi-media works explore physical phenomena through sculpture.

Robert Haskell will be creating new work during his residency and will present his methods and aesthetic in an Artist’s Talk the evening of Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at 7 PM.

Annual Members’ Exhibition Opening Reception

Annual Members’ Exhibition Opening Reception

The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center announces the opening reception for the Annual Members’ Exhibition on Saturday, May 28, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

All members of the non-profit arts education organization have the opportunity to show their work in this popular exhibition in the CSSC Gallery at 636 Marble Street, West Rutland.

An eclectic mix of techniques and media are always represented and artists of all levels have the chance to exchange ideas after the often-solitary winter.

The opening reception is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.

The exhibit runs through June 26. Gallery hours are daily, 10 AM-4 PM or by appointment.

Vermont’s Irish Rebels – an Historical Concert

1 pm:  Lt. John Sinnott graveside ceremony at St. Bridget’s Cemetery, Main St. (free)

2-6 pm:  Concert and presentations at Town Hall Auditorium, Marble St. ($10, students $5, 12 +under free).

Honoring the sesquicentennial of the Fenian Attacks into Canada, and the centennial of the Easter Rising in Ireland.

Many Irish living in Vermont played a crucial role as Union army soldiers at the Battle of Gettysburg – capturing artillery and opposing Pickett’s Charge.  (13th Vermont Infantry, Company A, Emmett Guards of Burlington, Captain John Lonergan).

Following the war, Fenian veterans throughout the Northeast participated in incursions into Canada (some through Vermont), to apply pressure on the British Empire in pursuit of Irish independence.

Many of those who survived the war, and one Lt. John Sinnott (who perished at Gettysburg), are buried at St. Bridget’s Cemetery in West Rutland, VT.

The Fenian movement nurtured a long tradition of Irish independence, and directly lead to the Easter Rising 1916, and foundation of the Republic of Ireland.

Manipulate Glass in Two-Day Workshop

The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center announces the two-day workshop “Fusing and Slumping Glass” with Angus Munro, April 16-17, 9 AM-5 PM.

Glass is a beautiful and fragile material to work. It can remarkably imitate any of the plastic mediums, but nothing can duplicate glass.

Participants will create the ideas for a sculptural work, design a form, and follow through to completion.

Fee of $325.00 includes materials and use of equipment.

7th Annual West Rutland Variety Show

7th Annual West Rutland Variety Show

The seventh annual West Rutland Variety Show will showcase local talent to raise money for the West Rutland Food Shelf.
Terry Jaye from WJJR will serve as the Masters of Ceremonies.
Members of St. Bridget and St. Stanislaus Kostka Churches in West Rutland will perform, as will the Rutland Curbstone Chorus and Castleton University’s a capella group Vocal Unrest.
Dancers from “Just Dance” Studio will perform, and adult and youth singers, musicians and comedians will round out the program.
The event will also feature a 50/50 raffle and a bake sale. All funds raised will go directly to the West Rutland Food Shelf.
