The town of Fair Haven is widely regarded as the slate capital of the United States. Located in the southwestern part of the county where the Taconic Mountains meet the Champlain Valley, Fair Haven is home to a number of slate quarries, an industry that continues to thrive today. It is one of the few towns in Rutland county that offer electric car charging stations.
Fair Haven has a charming downtown and business district, featuring several shops, restaurants, and the historic Village Green. The Green is the quintessential community space, hosting concerts and festivals in the warmer months. The Village Green is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Take a walk around the Village Green to be inspired by outstanding examples of Victorian architecture, including the Marble Mansion Inn.
Fair Haven is a small town with big-city amenities, including banks, pharmacies, a grocery store, and more. While you’re there, shop local and visit Carl Durfee’s Store. After, grab lunch or dinner at The Fair Haven Inn, Fair Haven Pizza House. The Wooden Soldier has you covered for the best breakfast in town.
The town park in the center of town hosts a variety of concerts throughout the summer starting in early June and finishing in mid-August. You can see a band playing at the park almost every week in the summertime. These concerts average around 700 people per event.
The former airport in Fair Haven is a popular spot for RC Pilot enthusiasts to hang out. It is now being transformed into a dog park and offers pavilions to rest and enjoy a nice lunch outdoors.
Fair Haven is home to the Fair Haven Recreation program, offering residents with children Pre-K through 7th grade the opportunity to give their children a fun and eventful summer. It is a seven-week program that offers free breakfast and lunch daily. Each week the program takes its participants to Castleton University to enjoy a day of swimming at the university’s pool. The program gives children a chance to play games, create art, dance, and try new experiences all day long. The program offers five field trips throughout the summer.
