Rutland County is home to 26 little towns and one big city. The region’s namesake, Rutland City, has the look and feel of a big city with unparalleled views of Vermont’s mountain peaks. Conveniently located just 20 minutes from Killington, Rutland is in what is affectionately known as the Killington Valley.

Vermont’s third-largest city has a vibrant, walkable downtown, with plenty of shops, restaurants, and more. Rutland’s shopping runs the gamut, from small boutiques downtown to large-chain retailers, grocery stores, and more. Whether you’re looking for something special for yourself or others, or in need of everyday essentials – you don’t have to look much further.

Rutland’s restaurants provide a first-rate culinary experience, with cozy diners and cafes, restaurants serving plates with farm-fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and several options for quick bites to go. If you’re visiting, we recommend trying Roots the Restaurant, TASO on Center, Hand Carved by Ernie, Hop ‘n Moose, Brix Bistro, Bueno Burrito, Little Harry’s, Table 24 … We could keep going. Rutland’s culinary scene includes some local legends, including Gill’s Delicatessen, and The Sandwich Shoppe. Gill’s has been a local staple for more than 50 years. The Sandwich Shoppe is family-owned and operated, and you can’t beat the warm welcomes you receive when you walk in this multi-generational family establishment.

While you’re downtown, we recommend a walking tour of the vibrant murals and the sculpture trail. Downtown is also home to a number of art galleries. You should also plan to catch a show at the historic Paramount Theatre (please check the schedule due to COVID-19) or stop by Wonderfeet Kids’ Museum.

Rutland is home to Vermont’s largest year-round farmers’ market, outside in Depot Park from May through October and indoors at the Farmers Food Center during the winter months.

Visit Center Street Marketplace, a quiet oasis that makes you forget you’re in the heart of Downtown Rutland, or take a trip to Pine Hill Park, which offers 17 miles of single-track trail spread over 325 acres of terrain. Pine Hill Park is perfect for mountain biking, trail running, hiking, snowshoeing, backcountry Nordic skiing, fat-tire biking, and more.
