National Association of Letter Carriers will host its 24th annual “Stamp out Hunger” food drive on Saturday, May 14th, 8am-5pm. The National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch #495 will be collecting non-perishable food items on that Saturday for distribution to food shelves in our Rutland County communities. Please place a food donation by your mailbox on Saturday and your local letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it to the food shelves. This event is a collaboration between our Rutland County United States Postal Service letter carriers, the United Way of Rutland County, the Rutland Community Cupboard, the Salvation Army, Fair Haven Concerned and BROC. NeighborWorks of Western Vermont is offering a Homebuyer Education class which gives you the tools, expertise, and support to make smart home buying decisions from start to finish. Homebuyer Education is a nationally recognized course taught by a nationally certified instructor. Class is taught as evening sessions during the week (two four-hour sessions). Rutland Area Physical Activity Coalition kicks off the 100 Miles in 100 Days Walking Challenge Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Parade on May 5th, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Join walkers who live or work in Rutland County as we walk one mile every day for 100 days. Open to all ages and abilities, this is a great opportunity to motivate yourself, your family, co-workers and friends to be more active, one mile at a time. This spring the challenge will begin Thursday, May 5, 2016 and take us through the summer months, finishing Friday, August 12, 2016. Get excited for an active summer and the habit of adding a mile of walking to your daily routine! Rutland County Humane Society Annual Yard Sale Fundraiser will take place on May 21, 2016 @ 9:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Rutland County Humane Society, 765 Stevens Road in Pittsford. Now is the perfect time to start cleaning out those attics, basements and closets! RCHS is happy to accept donations for the yard sale. All items must be pre-priced (nothing less than 25 cents) and in working order. No clothing, shoes, textbooks, magazines or computer equipment. Join the fun and support the animals! Rutland Free Library Book Sale will take place on May 20th, 10 am – 4 p.m. and May 21st, 10am-2pm. Thousands of gently used hard cover and paperback books, puzzles, CDs, DVDs for all ages! Rutland Regional Medical Center announces that Paul Gallo, a Rutland painting contractor, was elected to the Rutland Regional Medical Center Board of Directors at the hospital’s recent annual meeting. Gallo, is the owner and operator of Rutland’s Magic Brush Painting, one of northern New England’s largest painting contractors servicing four states. Gallo, a community advocate and champion has worked on the redevelopment of Center Street Marketplace, the creation of the Rutland Creek Path and the Wonderfeet Kids’ Museum. He has served as a Board member with Rutland Free Library, Rutland Head Start, Vice-President of the Paramount Theatre Board, Chair of the Rutland Creative Economy, the Italian-American Club and numerous advisory committees for local non-profits. Board officers recently elected include: John Casella, Chair; Michael Solimano, Vice-Chair, Joseph Kraus, Secretary.
The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center announces the two-day workshop “Metal as Line: Forge, Fuse, Taper and Fabricate for the Hand and Neck” with Paulette Werger, May 28-29, 9 AM-5 PM. Participants will create sinuous linear elements in silver that can be transformed into elegant pieces of finished jewelry. A variety of tools, techniques and jewelry forms will be demonstrated and discussed. Fee of $325.00 includes materials and use of equipment. The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center invites youth (ages 13-18) from the Rutland area to participate in an exciting, collaborative project for two weeks this summer. Under the instruction of master sculptor Nora Valdez, participants will design and carve a stone bench, to be installed in a Rutland area town. 2016 is the 8th year of the Stone Bench Project. The functional public art sculptures created become a point of pride for their makers and the communities they are placed in. Teamwork, skills building and cultural/historical appreciation are among the benefits derived by participants.
