The best way to describe the town of Hubbardton would be: Historic.

Hubbardton is home to Hubbardton Battlefield, where the Battle of Hubbardton took place in 1777. It was the only Revolutionary War battle fought entirely in what would become Vermont soil. The setting and views from the Battlefield are as they were then, with wide-open meadows and sweeping views of the Green and Taconic Mountain ranges. While you’re there, you can tour the museum or walk in history. During the third week of July, the town hosts “Hubbardton Day” at the Battlefield to celebrate the history of the town. The event includes a barbeque, games, wagon ride, concert, raffle, and fireworks.

There’s no better way to see Hubbardton than by mountain top. The Taconic Mountains Ramble State Park is open from late June through Labor Day, sitting on 204 acres. The park is home to a Japanese Zen Garden in the shadow of Mt. Zion, where you can enjoy a quiet moment to yourself, which is open from Memorial Day through early October. This is accessible by a steep, hilly trail.

Home to Halfmoon Pond State Park situated on Halfmoon Pond the park offers fishing, hiking camping, cabins, and a variety of interpretive programs. Offering both waterfront and wooded campsites, the park has 52 tent/RV sites, 5 Cabins, and 11 lean-to sites. The park provides kayaks, canoes, and paddleboats to rent. There are miles of trails throughout the park with a trail that will lead you to Lake Bomoseen State Park.

Hubbardton has an abundance of natural ponds all over the surrounding area. There are six main ponds to visit: Halfmoon pond, Austin pond, Beebe pond, Black pond, Roach pond, and High pond. The most note-worthy pond is High pond a nature conservancy area that is a haven for large mammals, birds, and a number of plant communities that supply the local habitat with food. Across from Beebe Pond is Eagle Rock, another wonderful hiking area. Black Pond is the host of the Black Pond Dog Paddle Race every summer and has numerous participants as well as a yearly t-shirt. The event takes place near the 4th of July and participants work to dog paddle across the pond.

Just north of Hubbardton is the quaint town of Sudbury. Containing several bodies of water, Sudbury is a great place to go fishing, kayaking, or paddleboarding. Explore the many ponds and lakes found in Sudbury including Burr Pond, and Lake Hortonia.

In the winter you can tour around the area via the VAST trail or check out the various snowshoeing locations.
