The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center invites youth (ages 13-18) from the Rutland area to participate in an exciting, collaborative project for two weeks this summer. Under the instruction of master sculptor Nora Valdez, participants will design and carve a stone bench, to be installed in a Rutland area town. 2016 is the 8th year of the Stone Bench Project. The functional public art sculptures created become a point of pride for their makers and the communities they are placed in. Teamwork, skills building and cultural/historical appreciation are among the benefits derived by participants. Students are selected through an application process. There is no charge for participation to students who are selected. Application deadline is June 10, 2016. The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center will host students from grades K-6 at “Picturing It” Art Camp April 18-21, 1-4 PM. As the world around us turns over a new leaf to welcome spring, we will be turning some pages in the world of picture book art. Instructor Zoë Marr Hilliard will lead students on a hands-on exploration of composition and the idea of telling a story through several illustration techniques. Registration fee is $85.00. Vermont Achievement Center will hold an Open House in celebration of the Month of the Young Child and Autism Awareness Month the Vermont Achievement Center, 88 Park Street in Rutland on Saturday April 9, 2016 from 10am-3pm. This event is free and open to the public and will feature children’s activities, parent workshops and informational and supportive vendors from the area. Children’s events will include a bounce house, VINS “Bird on a Glove” demonstration, Wonderfeet Museum, face painting, storytelling, pool party at Mitchell Therapy Pool, music with Mr. Leslie, Yoga with Kula Cooperative, and arts and crafts projects.
Parent workshops will focus on children on the Autism Spectrum and navigating behaviors along with some techniques on relaxation and promoting calmness.
There will also be area information and services from community partners. Parking is available in the VAC designated parking areas and at the Vermont State Fair Grounds, Park Street Parking area.
